  Adventure Club

Many women have spoken to Body Electric about their desire to get active, but acknowledged that they were faced with limitations. The Adventure Club was created for these women and others. We are a group of supportive, positive and encouraging women who want to give the girls and women of Santa Barbara more opportunities to be physically active.

We strive to have at least one activity per month. Some events are meant to challenge your perceptions of your body’s capabilities. Therefore, events range in ability level from moderate (e.g. walks) to strenuous and requiring special skills (e.g. knowing how to swim for the surfing event).

Thanks to a generous grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation, this year we're expanding our programming by offering 6-week follow-up clinics in some sports.  Our first such offering will be in January - basketball.  Participants may sign up for the one day clinic to see if they like playing basketball, the 6 week clinic to improve their skills and meet other like-minded women, or both clinics.

We’re also expanding our outreach efforts by striving to (1) set up social networks between event participants (who will hopefully then go on to continue the activity - click here for a prior success story titled Grassroots Basketball), and (2) team up with local organizations that regularly offer the activity to assist participants in continuing the activity.

Here are some women’s comments that motivated Body Electric to begin the Adventure Club:

  • “Since I didn’t grow up playing sports, like my daughters, I feel a little intimidated to try something now.”
  • “I can’t get my friends to try something new with me. It would be nice to have a group of women to try new sports with.”
  • “I play on a co-ed soccer team with my husband but I would enjoy playing sports with a group of women also.”
  • “I don’t have the money to learn a new sport/activity without knowing if I will like it.”
  • “I don’t have the time to plan an event.”

Our goals are:

  1. To promote Body Electric and educate the community about its goals;
  2. To provide more opportunities for girls & women to be physically active;
  3. To learn new physical activities;
  4. To challenge the physical capabilities of our bodies;
  5. To form a network of positive, encouraging and physically active girls & women.

We thrive on the knowledge that women are physically talented, strong, and perfectly capable of succeeding in sports and physical activities. The Adventure Club is one of many Body Electric programs, and the only program that is for women and girls only. We encourage everyone who is interested to contact us and find out more about how to get involved.
